“Responsibility for the Quality of Our Lives”
It all begins with an idea.
The “Self” is a person’s essential being that distinguishes them from others, especially considered as the object of introspection or reflexive action. Also known as the “I”, “ego”, “oneself”, “person”, “persona”, “identity”, “character”, “mind”, “soul”, “spirit”, “personality”, “psyche”.
Direction is the course that must be taken in order to reach a destination, and also a general way in which someone or something is developing.
Being self directed is making our own decisions and organizing our own work, rather than being told what to do. Following our hearts, our intuition, that whisper, our dreams, our passions, our light, is being self directed and expressing our true authentic selves. Self direction is about moving towards something. It is about wanting to move towards something that taps into our values, interests, and passions. We are changing because of want, something we want to do, accomplish, and/or succeed at. Self direction is about proactive and planful choices, decisions, and actions. A solid positive change always involves some degree of risk taking, but this is also supported by reason, planning, decision making, weighing the pros and cons. A goal of being self directed is to see problems as a part and parcel of the ongoing experience, and attempting to solve problems as they arise. Being self directed means learning from experiences and mistakes to grow and mold ourselves towards the highest expression of our true self.
Self destruction is about moving away. It is about “should''. I “should” make more money, I “should” have a better title, I “should” date someone more handsome and/or acceptable to my parents. We are changing because of the “shoulds'' in life. Being self destructive means impulsive, reactionary, and escapist. Self destructive change runs on pure negative, the “fed up”, “out of here”, and “get-away-now-response”. All problems are seen as a 5,000lb boulder in the road and the only option is to back away and leave them in the dust. Being self destructive means blaming and creating a simplistic explanation. Not using the experience to learn and fine tune ourselves. Our lives will inevitably leave us falling into the same hole over and over again, neglecting to see the complexity of what has unfolded. We miss the role we played in the process, and walk away with little learned for next time. So how do we promote self direction?
Visualization, positive affirmations, habitual self talk, our thoughts, the way we speak, the way we behave, etc. Below are some resources and explanations on self direction, visualization, positive affirmations, and manifestation.
